Why I Won't Find Out the Gender of my Baby

Okay, okay, don't you all loose your underpants.
I'm not expecting, with child, pregnant, or knocked up.

No, I'm not 'close' to having a baby, heck, I'm not even married, but it seems like all my favey bloggers are having babies, and they have all found out the gender.  I have totally enjoyed following you guys as your family grows (here, here, here, and here.)  I can't wait to see how the little ones change your lives and melt your hearts; I just know they'll all be perfect.

But I don't think I am going to find out the gender of my first baby,
and here is why.
Also I want to preface this entire post by saying I may change my mind in my future.
(I know that's not fair, I'm supposed to stand behind everything I say, and I do, I stand behind what I am saying now in this moment.)

It's one of the few things in life that is a honest surprise.
Something that isn't planned out.
Yes, said baby is planned (maybe hopefully) but the gender isn't.
And the good news is, you won't be disappointed either way.

If you're like me, you always know your next 'move' in life.
You leave few things open to interpretation, there are really no surprises.
This is pretty much how my life has gone.
First it's High School, and then you apply to college.
You get your acceptance letters, and decided where you are going to spend your next four years.
College happens, and you pick your major.
You might not know exactly what you are going to do when you graduate,
but either way have an idea of what job field you are going into.
You interview, you get a job, you choose to accept it or not.
You might have a boyfriend, it started with a date, you decided to go on another date,
and another, until yup, you were for sure dating and FBO.
You get more serious with your boyfriend, you know he's he one for you.
You talk about moving in, and you do.
....
Fast Forward
....
You're pregnant, expecting a little one.
You have nine months to prepare, read, and get ready.
Although from what I hear nothing will really prepare you.
And you don't know.
You don't know if you're getting a boy or a girl.
Your not sure if your life will be full of muddy jeans and footballs, or frenchbraids and ballet,
but you're happy, elated, over the moon, speechless, indescribably blessed either way.
...
I want the suprirse.
The element of the 'unknown'.
And the pleasure of knowing your love is unconditional no matter what.

Will you find out if your having a boy or a girl?
What are your reasons?

  1. YES! i totally want to wait to find out when we have kids too...at least for kid #1! i figure with kid #2 we MIGHT change our minds. but so far i have my hubs on board for not finding out (ask me again when i'm pregnant though). my reasoning is similar to yours, it's the one real BIG surprise in life, why rob yourself of that just to plan a nursery or clothing? also, i like more neutral clothing myself, and it'll be nice to have more beige / gray /orange, etc. i'm not a huge dress my kid in pink or blue person. and lastly (in the longest comment ever), if you have all gender neutral stuff in the beginning you can reuse it for your other future children! plus no one does the surprise anymore, so it's more unique now!

    1. I totally agree with you on neutral clothing. I am not saying my girl will never wear dresses, but nothing too fuu-fuu-ey (I can't spell clearly). I totally like the idea of having the cloths and baby accessories being usable two either gender that way after #1 you are already prepped for number two!!!

  3. I found out with my first one. If I ever do have a second, I want to be surprised! Most of the time, I am not a fan of surprises, but that would be a great one :)

    1. That's interesting :) Glad you shared with me. I think it would be the best surprise of all!!! I get finding out, I have heard it makes the Dad feel more involved and connected during the pregnancy. Again I might change my mind, but right now this is how I feel!!!

  4. I agree with this. I definitely think it is one of the last few surprises in life so I think maybe it would be fun to wait. Since so many people find out what they're having these days, to be the one person who says "we don't know" will be really fun. Great post.

    1. We can not find out together and then we can either have kids that date or kids that are besties....hopefully we both have a girl at some point. Hello legacies !!!

  5. I don't want to know! Unfortunately, my husband does, so we'll have to see what we actually decide once we're expecting (which is not any time soon!). BUT I have decided that if we do find out, we won't announce the name until we actually have the baby. I'm with you on loving the surprise aspect!

    1. Yeah, you guys will figure it out when you cross that bridge. Again a long ways out!!! Keeping the name secret will be fun!!! It's a great idea (I'll have to keep that in mind if my boyfriend decides he wants to know).

  10. we definitely found out :) I felt like there was enough that we couldn't control with the whole getting pregnant thing that I wanted to be able to decorate the nursery and buy things gender specific and feel like we had some planning we could do! and we were surprised the day we found out. BUT I still have a fear she will come out a boy - if you didn't find out that would not be a concern!

  11. You have more strength than I.... and I do think it is cool that some people keep it a surprise for them..it's kind of exciting :) I don't think I would make it that long without knowing..and plus, I'll want to deck out the nursery and stock up on the appropriate clothes...we know I have a bit of a shopping "habit" ;)
